http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/12/12/dingell-blames-some-southern-senators-for-auto-bailout-defeat/#more-32529

Senators from the southern states that have foreign auto plants are being blamed for the defeat of the auto bailout. Their reasoning is that a collapse of the big three would do these foreign companies good.  I think they are mistaken since many of the same suppliers supply both the big three and the foreign companies. I'm not sure what the situation is now but I know at one time General Motors was the largest customer of BFG. If that's still the case, a big three collapse could shut down the plant here. Some accuse the southern senators of wanting to break the unions. They want to force the UAW to agree that American worker will make no higher wages than their foreign counterparts. Since when is it OK for government to dictate the wages of American workers? This is the GOP at it's worst.

I can't decide in this situation. I do know that I don't want the government(us) to bail them out without some changes taking place within their companies... Undecided

Me, too, Darla.  And would someone tell me again why those companies pay their CEOs huge salaries to run those companies into the ground?  Jeeze Louise!

And then try to blame all their woes on their workers.

Everyone except Ford it seems.  Ford said they don't need the money.  Ford is supporting the other two because they use some of the same suppliers and if the suppliers go out it will hurt Ford.

I sure wish I would of bought that Ford stock the other day when it was down to $1.20 a share.

Foreign companies received huge tax breaks, cheap land, etc. when they built their factories in the South. They have already received their bail out money. They also located in right to work states. They have an unfair advantage over the Detroit auto makers. Why shouldn't we help out a industry that has been a staple of our ecinomy for decades? BUT, if we do, keep the federal Govt. out of the planning process. What do they know about building cars?

there should be no bailouts for anyone in the corporate sector. they have mismanaged their own companies and slapped all themselves with bonuses while their companies fail and take the world economy with it although wall street is largely responsible.

if anyone should get bailouts it's the american people in the form of vouchers (and not be taxable) to pay their credit cards, loans, and mortgages or to buy a new car.

this would have brought the country out of a recession quicker and would have been more responsible way then to bailout the criminals who got us in this position in the first place.
